And while the couple, who has been together for just over a year, admits the news came as a shock at first, that reaction quickly turned to joy for the duo, who has been living together since last September.

Visiting them at their Melbourne home, it’s clear how excited they are about starting a family together. Katie, who’s now six months pregnant, has even found the time, between gigs, to start making dolls for her babies, who are due late June.

Katie first shot to fame 11 years ago, when she starred in reality talent show Popstarsand went on to form Bardot with four other girls – including Tiffani Wood and Sophie Monk – before quitting the group to pursue her solo interests in 2001. As she pats her belly, she tells OK! of the very modern way she met Darren, a marketing manager and ‘the man of my dreams’ – through Facebook.

What makes their union all the more special is that up until last year, Katie was resigned to the idea that she would never fall deeply in love again or become a parent. ‘I feel very, very lucky,’ she reveals. ‘I’ve suddenly reached a point that I never knew I would reach. I have everything I want and more!’

How is pregnancy treating you, Katie?
Fine most of the time. I get pretty tired in the afternoons. I’ve been doing prenatal yoga for the last eight or nine weeks, which has kept me in pretty good shape.
Darren: She gets a few odd cravings…
Katie: Yes, one week it’s cereal, the next week it’s fish. One week I was crazily eating egg, avocado and potato sandwiches. It’s always for just one week – though I consistently enjoy Lindt balls.

How much are you looking forward to this big life change?
I’m really excited. Until recently, I hadn’t thought I’d ever reach this point – that I’d be about to become a mum at 35. I’d always wanted to have children – with the right partner. I’ve been married before but it didn’t happen in that relationship.

Had you planned to become pregnant so soon after falling in love?
Our original plan was to spend a year together, living together and look at starting a family. But it all happened a whole lot faster than we imagined!
